Saltcedar (Tamarisk) - Tamarix sp.

The billowing reddish branches on the range map below indicate Tamarisk's main range---it occurs other places too, but usually not in such serious infestations.

Tamarisk is often called saltcedar because it oozes salt from its leaves. This salt accumulates in the soil and makes it very difficult for other plants to grow nearby. Saltcedar also sucks large amounts of water from the ground, transforming valuable desert streams and ponds into salty dry basins.
