Leafy spurge - Euphorbia esula 

As you can see below, leafy spurge is particularly bad in the northcentral states (it extends far into Canada too). It may also be found in other areas, but not usually in such bad infestations.

This euphorbia species is a distant relative of the poinsettia and various cactus-like houseplants. Like those plants, it has a milky sap that most insects and animals find distasteful. Since so few creatures feed upon it, it spreads madly, reducing natural habitats or ranchland into a barren landscape of nothing but leafy spurge.
