Brooms - Cytisus, Genista, Spartium

The range map below shows how the west coast and Californian mountains are infested by brooms, but do not be surprised if you find brooms other places too.

Brooms are shrubby members of the pea family. They flower profusely and in peak season are quite beautiful. But after the flowers come the seeds. The vast numbers of seeds make this plant particularly hard to control because any soil disturbance results in a new crop of seedlings. Soon the broom plants become so densely packed that nothing else can grow amongst them.
