Brazilian Pepper-Tree - Schinus terebinthifolius

The range map below may lead you to believe this weedy tree is only found in Florida, but do not be so complacent. Small infestations have been found as far away as Los Angeles, and it causes serious problems in Hawai'i!

Native mangrove habitats? Who needs them! Pine flatwood areas? Get rid of them! That is what would happen to our natural areas if Brazilian pepper-tree continues to grow. The plant produces such thick shade little can grow underneath it. Then to worsen the blow, it releases allelopathic compounds which inhibit the growth of other plants. This is a highly invasive plant.
