Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is another floating aquatic plant that may completely blanket lakes, bayous and sloughs, sharply altering light availability and dissolved oxygen levels. This species is native to South America, but is a serious pest in tropical and warm temperate areas around the world. In the US, it has invaded central California, Arizona, the Gulf states, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky and Virginia.
