In many areas of the Pacific Northwest knapweeds (Centaurea spp.) have invaded and displaced native bunchgrasses. Here, a comparison of the roots of a native wheatgrass and the invasive non-native spotted knapweed (Centaurea maculosa, right) demonstrates a striking difference between the fibrous, soil-holding roots of the former and the thin taproot of the latter.
