With additional time, however, melaleuca can take over entirely, changing the herbaceous native marsh to a wooded swamp completely dominated by one species. In addition to altering the structure of the vegetation, melaleuca forests like this one use copious amounts of water, alter soil temperatures and burn at extremely high temperatures.
