On occasion new invasions are detected and contained or eradicated. The plant shown flowering here is coincya (Coincya monensis), whose only known population in western North America was found at Arcata Dunes National Wildlife Refuge in northwestern California. It was forming a dense population there and moving into back dune, habitat for several rare native species. Fortunately, C. monensis populations were still small and managers at the site took quick action and are well on the way to eradicating it. For more information about this invasion, see Martin (2002). | |||
