Some forest invaders may likewise be of the same basic growth form as native dominants, but can form single-species stands that displace natives. The striking broadleaved tree shown here is miconia (Miconia calvescens) invading a forest on Maui where it was caught early enough that there is still hope of eradicating it. Managers there sounded the alarm after seeing the damage this species has done in Tahiti, where it was introduced to a botanical garden in 1937 but subsequently escaped and now covers over two-thirds of the island (Meyer and Florence 1996). | |||
