This photo shows giant reed (all the tawny patches) along the Santa Margarita River in southern California. Here and elsewhere in the southwestern US and adjacent Mexico thick infestations of this grass block streamflows and alter sedimentation patterns. Giant reed also burns well and promotes hot fires in riparian communities that were rarely subjected to fires before they were invaded. Many of the native riparian trees and shrubs in these areas are not adapted to fires and sharply decrease in abundance following burns. | |||
