Lippincott also found that cogongrass builds up fine fuel mass more rapidly than native grasses, thus allowing more frequent fires. The increased frequency further reduces chances that long-leaf pine seedlings will escape the fires by reducing the time seedlings have to grow tall and thick barked enough to withstand the heat of the next fire in this region of frequent lightning strikes. This figure is based on data from Lippincott's published research. | |||
