The invasive plants that are most harmful to native biodiversity are those, like this red brome (Bromus madritensis subsp. rubens), that significantly change ecosystem processes, often so much so that many natives can barely survive in the area, if at all. Red brome transforms the southwestern desert areas it invades by fueling fires where the native vegetation did not and where the native species cannot survive frequent and widespread burns.
