The Forest Research Institute with its 110th anniversary celebrated in 2008 is one of the oldest forestry institutions in Slovakia. At present, it forms an integral part of the National Forest Centre and is engaged in forestry and tree related research.

• Performs in a complex way the tasks in forest research and promotes development in all fields of forestry, nature and environment in relation to forest ecosystems and anthropogenic effects
• Develops research projects on the basis of national and international grant agencies and research programmes (EC, APVV, OSN, projects of bilateral co-operation, and s.o.) and from assignment of the Ministry of Agriculture of SR (MoA SR)
• Secures professional tasks and services for MoA SR (reviews, statements, legislation, and s.o.), Forest Protection Service and Seed Production Control
• Directly takes part in monitoring of forest health, national forest inventory and monitoring of forest ecosystems and their parts. Partially also provides expert, consulting, educational, librarian and promoting activities
