1. Meeting #4 location and date set
From: Barry Rice (bamrice(at)ucdavis.edu)
The Eastern Invasives Network Meeting #4 will be held at Archbold
Biological Station, Florida. The meeting will be starting on the morning
of 13 January, and last until around 5pm on 15 January. We have not set up
registration, or any of the other logistical details yet, but I thought
you might want to know in case you are already blocking off dates in your
calendar. The station is near Lake Placid, airport access is well
illustrated in the following map:
http://www.archbold-station.org/abs/images/map.gif
More about the station is at: http://www.archbold-station.org/
This meeting will be less expensive than the previous meetings, as we
boldly innovate and take risks on being cheap. But really, that's what TNC
is all about! Get this---the costs of room AND board will be $38/day. Hah
hah hah! If it turns out to be a bad place, blame Doria (she recommended
it). It if turns out to be a good place, give me the credit (for deciding
to hold the meeting there).

2. Jennifer's ruminations
From: Jennifer Hillmer (jhillmer(at)(at)tnc.org)
Dear Colleagues:
I am leaving TNC in early August for a land steward job at the Holden
Arboretum (Kirtland, Ohio) on September 2. I will miss you greatly - this
workshop has been one of the best things going for some time. I will stay
involved with statewide and regional invasive species stuff, and I hope to
remain with the network to its poignant conclusion.
I am ruminating on the stewardship decision framework that I presented at
Workshop #3, and I would appreciate your comments on the ideas I set forth
in my triangle-heavy presentation. To wit, I have repackaged the ideas
into ecological management goals and measurable objectives which could
apply to multiple scales. I am sending the summary document (6 pages,
large type, no pictures) to Barry, and I can email it to you if you
request it before August 6!
(Barry's note: you can download this from our site at:
http://tncinvasives.ucdavis.edu/listarch02/fund-stew-goals.doc)
I wrote the summary for the volunteer crew chiefs, my stewardship
director, and the next land steward as a preface to my revised management
plans. The work plans will set out strategies and goals for the next 3 to
10 years, which is a typical timeline for modest stewardship results. (Our
state director talks about "long-range" strategic plans - i.e. 3 to 5
years. Hmmph.)
I will use this framework to write new management plans in my new job, and
I intend to use translate what I learn from these intellectual
exercises into a training method to increase the regional stewardship
capacity of partners and volunteers. Please, please comment on my ideas
and pass them to land managers for their comments as well.
I'm at my TNC email and phone number until August 6th. After September 2,
I think my email will be jhillmer(at)holdenarb.org. I'll let you know. My
home email is jhillmer(at)bright.net.
