1. Lespedeza cuneata control--urgent!
From: Paul J. Harmon (pharmon(at)dnr.state.wv.us)
During a field trip of the West Virginia Native Plant Society along the
New River, I discovered that since last year there seems to have been a
huge increase in Lespedeza cuneata! It seems to have increased within a
year to spread over this very special 'flat-rock community' along the New
River, and threatens to overtake the majority of the habitat for about a
dozen rare plants.
I tested just pulling the thing out of the cracks in the sandstone within
which it is growing, and I couldn't budge it! It's in flower and hasn't
yet gone to fruit this year. I'm considering calling an emergency
volunteer work party immediately to cut the plants, bag them before they
go much to seed, and then try to herbicide them. Does this sound
reasonable to others?

2. Effects of herbicide on ground-cover
From: Brenda Herring (longleaf(at)nuc.net)
The Longleaf Pine Restoration Project at Eglin Air Force Base is currently
researching the effects of herbicide on ground-cover. We have begun to
construct a bibliography on current research and are looking for
information from any individuals that have done work in this area. If
anyone has conducted research on this subject as it relates to restoration
of longleaf pine communities or knows of any work that is going on at
present, please contact Brenda Herring.
