                      Piper Oregon-grape, Berberis aquifolium. An evergreen shrub growing from 1-3ft tall. Native to North America but introduced to Europe. Plant has prickly foliage with dark green spiny leaves similar to holly and bloom with profuse clusters of yellow flowers. Fruit is dark blue berry with hard stone. Not a grape, the plant has been identified with barberry, Berberis. Edible berries are used in jellies and wine-making although bitter and requiring sugar.Plant often used on roadways and verges, parks and has gone wild.
