This is a large, flightless, false wireworm beetle about 1 inch (25 mm) or a little less long. It is shining black but there is a broad, variable, reddishpurple band down the middle of the back. Wing covers are flattened, turned up at the sides, and have 6 ridges with scattered pits. The broad pronotum is turned up at the sides and is sparsely covered with pits. This beetle raises its abdomen in a defensive posture when disturbed.
