The German cockroach is one of the smaller house roaches. It is muddy brown in color with 2 parallel stripes on the pronotum or head shield. Adults measure about 5/8 inch (16 mm) from the top of the head to the wing tips. Both sexes are winged when grown. Females carry their eggs in a small bean-shaped packet until they are nearly ready to hatch. Young German roaches are yellowish or yellowish-brown. This species may complete a generation in 3 months, and there are commonly two generations a year. The German cockroach is the most common roach infesting homes and apartment buildings in Kansas.
