The wheel bug is so named because of the cogwheel like crest of the scutellum. This is a large, stout bodied bug 1 1/4 inches (32 mm) long with long, slender, reddish brown antennae. The body is grayish black. The membrane of the front wing is coppery. It is common and readily attracts attention because of its large size and peculiar shape. It is predacious and beneficial. This insect does not bite people readily, but when it does the bite is extremely painful.
