From: Mandy Tu (imtu(at)tnc.org) Dear Most Excellent Eastern U.S. folks, REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for our upcoming EIN "Workshop on Invasive Species Prevention and Management: Spotlight on Salty Species" to be held October 7-9th, 2008 in Silver Beach, Eastern Shore of Virginia. We are pleased to extend this invitation to you to join fellow ecologists, land stewards and government relations specialists from the Eastern and Southern U.S. Conservation Regions to Virginia's beautiful Eastern Shore to share challenges and innovations in preventing, managing and monitoring invasive species with a special emphasis in coastal and estuarine environments. The projects that we will go deep into during this workshop highlight invasive species in wet habitats, but all the overall strategies, actions, measures and discussion topics will be applicable to all TNC staff who work on invasive species prevention and management. In this workshop, we hope to accomplish the following objectives: * Gain a collective understanding of the state of knowledge regarding coastal and estuarine invaders and the key strategies being implemented to combat them. * Determine key government relations strategies for preventing coastal and estuarine invaders and how best to advance these within respective chapters as well as state and regional invasive species councils. * Identify best practices in preventing and managing coastal and estuarine invaders in the context of sea level rise and global climate change. * Conduct peer review and critique of measuring success of invasive species control and management projects in coastal environments. Cost: The workshop is free to all participants. Some meals will also be provided. Participants have to pay their own travel, lodging, and some meal costs. Workshop details, including travel and registration information are now available at http://tncinvasives.ucdavis.edu/networks.html Hope to see you there! Warm regards, The EIN 2008 Planning Team --------------------------------------- 2. WIMS Training Opportunities From: Mandy Tu (imtu(at)tnc.org) There will be two upcoming in-person training sessions to learn how to use TNC's Weeds Information Management System (WIMS). WIMS is an Access database application that works to keep track of weed locations, patch size and status and any management treatments, and can also be used for mapping in the field. The two training sessions are: - August 13 (Weds) at the TNC's Nickel Preserve in Oklahoma. - October 10 (Fri) at the Silver Beach YMCA in Virginia (immediately following the Eastern Invasives Learning Network workshop) There is no cost for the training other than those incurred for travel. If interested, please contact Chris Walls for the Oklahoma training (cwalls(at)tnc.org or 918-456-7601) or Mandy Tu for the Virginia training (imtu(at)tnc.org or 503-802-8150). For more information on WIMS see http://tncinvasives.ucdavis.edu/wims.html |
