Microstegium thesis online --------------------------------------- 1. Be a part of the Planning Committee for the next EIN Workshop #7! From Mandy Tu (imtu(at)tnc.org) Do you want to be part of our most excellent Planning Committee for the next workshop? If there is something that you would like to see addressed in our next workshop, be part of our banner group!! For this next year, being on the Planning Committee mostly entails participating in monthly phone calls. As the workshop approaches, you may be asked to contribute a bit more and to help during the workshop itself. Our most excellent group currently includes: Gwynn Crichton (VA), Troy Weldy (Eastern NY), Bob Nelson (FL), Hilary Oles (Adirondacks NY), Jess Toro (MA), Dave Gumbart (CT), Kris Serbesoff-King (FL) and myself. Please let me know if you are interested! --------------------------------------- 2. EIN Workshop #7, approximate date and tentative place determined! From: Mandy Tu (imtu(at)tnc.org) No, we do not yet have a final date set for the next Eastern Invasives Network meeting, but it is tentatively scheduled for October 2008 in Virginia Beach, Virginia! Why so long between workshops? We decided that this summer is coming up too fast and we are also trying to best accommodate the fire/burn season for the Virginia folks. So, set aside Fall 2008 for the next EIN meeting and start making sure that you will have adequate travel funds to get there!! --------------------------------------- 3. Non-herbicide methods for Phrag control? From: Mandy Tu (imtu(at)tnc.org) We have a very dated ESA on our website noting all sorts of different management treatments for Phragmites australis control. Are you currently managing Phrag without using herbicides? If so, please let me know what you are doing, the timing of your treatments, if it is effective, etc. Thanks! --------------------------------------- 4. Microstegium thesis online From: Doug Samson (dsamson(at)tnc.org) As most of you know, Sherry Adams, a master's student at Appalachian Lab, did her thesis on Microstegium effects in herbaceous plant communities along the C&O Canal, and her work was supported by a 2006 BCRF award from our Chapter. Sherry did a tremendous amount of good work, and has already finished and defended her thesis. Feel free to share Sherry's BCRF report with professional colleagues. Because she worked with NPS/C&O Canal NHP, I'm sure she's already given those folks copies (I'm not sure about GWMP). And I imagine some of the members of ma-eppc are familiar with her work. I'm going to forward these to MD NHP colleagues.Sherry is in the job market, so yell if you hear of any good opportunities.... Copies of her revised BCRF Final Report, as well as her entire thesis, can be temporarily downloaded from the following urls: http://tncinvasives.ucdavis.edu/temp/adamsreport.pdf (2MB) http://tncinvasives.ucdavis.edu/temp/adamsthesis.pdf (1MB) |
