Global Invasive Species Team listserve digest #084 Wed May 09 2001 - 19:06:06 PDT --CONTENTS-- 1. Spray Rigs (Idaho) 2. Need goats? (Colorado) 3. Killing cypress spurge (Vermont) 4. Garlic mustard samples needed (Nationwide) --------------------------------------- 1. Spray Rigs (Idaho) From: Bob Unnasch (bunnasch(at)tnc.org) What I think Wayne is referring to (Listserve Digest #83) are called pressure washers. They are commonly used to wash off heavy equipment. Check out Northern Tool & Equipment: http://www.northerntool.com --------------------------------------- 2. Need goats? (Colorado) From: Sarah Harris (sarahbee(at)scottsbluff.net) We have been using goats for weed control, on knapweed, spurge, and thistle for the last 10 years. We have successfully cleared large areas on our property of thistle, and have worked in Cherry Creek State Park (Denver) and areas in Wyoming grazing and seeding. We are looking for weed graze for about 350 head of goats. We have our own fencing, supplies, and herder. We would be interested in discussing any grazing you may have in your area. Larger areas, and extended grazing time will take precedence. We are negotiable on fee depending on cost and transportation. --------------------------------------- 3. Killing cypress spurge (Vermont) From: Jane Moscowitch (jmoscowitch(at)tnc.org) We have an infestation of cypress spurge on a calcareous riverside seep growing amongst eight rare and endangered plants. A woman at URI, Heather Faubert, has been doing research on biocontrol and has had some success with some of the same beetles used on leafy spurge. I would love to talk to you about anything you have tried and I could share with you the information I have been gathering. --------------------------------------- 4. Garlic mustard samples needed (Nationwide) From: Vicki Nuzzo (vnuzzo(at)earthlink.net) Bernd Blossey and I are working to develop biocontrol of garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata). We are making significant progress and have identified a number of promising biocontrol agents in Europe. At the same time we have found quite a few weevils, leaf miners and fungi that attack plants here in the US. These species seem to be more common in the Northeast than Midwest, but we have only a small sample size, and no data from the Southeast or West. We would like to investigate this further by collecting adult garlic mustard plants (that have just finished flowering and still have green siliques) and dissecting the roots, shoots, and siliques for the various insects. This is where we would like you to help us by providing samples from your area. If you are willing to help us, please email me and I will send you instructions on how to collect and label samples. |
