Miconia (velvet tree) is a perennial shrub/tree native to Central and South America. Plants begin as a shrub, but develop into trees which can grow up to 49.2 ft. (15 m) tall. Leaves are velvety, dark green on top, purple underneath, and can reach up to 3.2 ft. (1 m) in length. Leaves have three prominent pale green nerves. Flowering can occur year round, but typically occurs 2-3 times per year, when small, white flowers develop. Fruits are small, fleshy, sweet-tasting berries that are ΒΌ in. (7 mm) in diameter and purple-black when mature. Miconia was introduced to Hawaii in 1961 as an ornamental.
