5438865 Historic This is a "face" (also called turpentine face) where the bark is chipped off in a herring bone pattern from a slash pine or longleaf pine. The tree resin exudes out and collects in cups as it runs down the face. The collected resin is called "gum", which is distilled to make turpentine. This photo was taken is 1939. The practice has almost disappeared in the US as it is very labor intensive. It was also called the "Naval Stores" industry.
