Institute of Sylviculture and Forest Protection<br/> (University of West Hungary) Sylviculture and forest protection, and the related theoretical and practical subjects are taught in the Institute of Sylviculture and Forest Protection. Both sciences play an important role in forest management and were integral parts of the initial curriculum in the early period of educating forestry professionals.

Studying sylviculture, students learn about the evolution of forest ecosystems, their development, afforestation, regeneration after cutting, tending juvenile forests, and managing mature forests up to harvesting. Separate subjects cover sapling and seedling production, nursery establishment and maintenance, alleys and shelterbelts. During excursions students learn about forestry practices developed in various parts of the country.

The subject Forest Protection teaches the preservation of forest health, biology of pests and pathogens destructive to forest trees and their natural enemies. The institute gives a thorough education about the vertebrate and invertebrate animals in forest; fungi and other pathogenic organisms, their life cycles, and methods of protection against them.

The institute is equipped with state of the art genetic, mycological and entomological laboratory.
