USDA Forest Service

The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service is a Federal agency that manages public lands in national forests and grasslands. The Forest Service is also the largest forestry research organization in the world, and provides technical and financial assistance to state and private forestry agencies. Gifford Pinchot, the first Chief of the Forest Service, summed up the purpose of the Forest Service—"to provide the greatest amount of good for the greatest amount of people in the long run."

1564089 larch casebearer parasitic wasp Agathis pumila Female of the European parasitoid, Agathis pumila (Ratz.), introduced into North America for biological control, is shown ovipositing into its host, the needlemining stage of the larch casebearer.
1564014 Braconid wasp Coeloides vancouverensis parasitism of the Douglas-fir beetle
1564001 Braconid wasp Coeloides vancouverensis Coeloides vancouverensis (Dalla Torre) ovipositing through Douglas-fir bark onto Douglas-fir beetle larvae.  This photo shows that in the laboratory rearing program the thickness of the bark had been routinely shaved to a thickness less than the ovipositor length to allow easy access to the host.  In the field, thick bark provides sanctuary except in crevices and tree tops.
