Descriptor: Field Preparation
Description: Early production of cantaloupe in the desert southwestern U.S. uses a mid-bed trench system. The field is seeded in a trench in the top of the bed and covered in plastic to form a miniature greenhouse. This protects plants from frost and heats soil to promote quick germination. As plants enlarge, plastic will be removed. January 1996
